Tonight I put the plates and door knobs on the bathroom door.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then I took the window frame apart and painted the outside trim…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

…and cut, stained, and glued on some inside trim, as well as a windowsill.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Added the window back in…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

…and laid the ceiling on top (still needs to be trimmed and glued and painted).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The power strip I want is still on back order, so I can only light one of the lamps up at a time for now…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

…but this side of the back of the house is starting to look like a real home.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Good night.

Went back to working on the bathroom walls tonight.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

First, I glued in the last dado.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Got the wall tiles and trim ready and put them on, stringing the electrical wires through them.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Got the sliver of tiles done in the corner by the door…

P3273875_6_7_8_9

…and added the door trim.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After a lot of wiggling and struggling, I got the wires for the first sconce through the wall and out one of the little holes on the top…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

…and then the second one.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then I glued a tiny piece of foam on the back of the mirror so it would be angled downward when I hung it…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hung the mirror and put the rest of the bathroom fixtures back in.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I still need to finish the window frame, add a window shade, and glue on the ceiling…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

But I’m almost done with this room…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

…and it’s fun to create a reflection of an over-sized face in the mirror (I’ll just have to remember to look a little less tired next time…)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Good night.

Added the finishing touches to the linen closet this evening.

First the back plates for the door handles…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then the door knobs went on and I added more towels and linens…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I added trimming to the sheets and towels, which made them look instantly more refined…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Including the towel in the bathroom…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I will probably add a hatbox or two on that top shelf, but for now, I am officially declaring this tiny room done.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

So four rooms down, and eighteen to go…

Good night.

Decided to let the nursery floor problems rest for a little while and went back to the linen closet tonight.

Which looked like this last time I left it…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The bottom shelf liner was too wide, so I started by hemming it so it would fit.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then I took cardboard from a cookie box to cut and glue the bottom and the lid to a Shaker box.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I also designed and cut out a cardboard box out of a cereal box. I figured every closet has at least one cardboard box in it somewhere…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I painted the Shaker box…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

…and after adding a second coat of paint and a couple dots for nails, I placed the boxes on the top shelf.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Next I cut out and stained the other three shelves for the left wall.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Sewed together a lacy shelf-liner for the top shelf on the right…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And made three more liners for the last three shelves, as well as cut out more towels and sheets…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Still need to fill up the shelves on the left, but this room is pretty much done…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And it’s past my bedtime now, so goodnight.

Floor board troubles

So starting from here…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

…I cut out many more floor boards to continue the pattern. But when I laid them down, I realized the pattern was off a little and the cracks between the boards were getting awfully big on the left-hand side.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

So I pulled them all back up. This means tomorrow I will have to do a lot of custom fitting to get this pattern to work right…..sigh.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Too tired to solve the problem now.

And so, good night…

Tonight I started like this…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

…and added this.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Stained and glued them…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Made more…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Stained and glued those…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then decided to call it a night.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Amazing how much time these little pieces of wood can take…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Good night.

Tonight I went back to work on the nursery floor.  First, I finished the trim boards and glued them all in.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Next, I started cutting out several little boards–each 3/8″ X 9/8″–to make the herringbone pattern.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After I got about thirty of them done, I sanded and stained them all…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

…and placed them on the floor.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’ll take quite a while to finish this floor, but I think it’ll be worth it in the end.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

At least I hope so…

Good night.

I started out tonight by taking apart the nursery door…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

…so I could put it back together with the door opening on the other side.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then, after having glued the hallway stairs and floor into place, I cut out the inside and outside doorway walls for the nursery…which required a lot of readjusting and fiddling along the way.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Finally, I had both doorways glued in and could put the door in place.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I painted the nursery floor black, because then if there are any cracks between the floor boards, they will look more natural.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And I stained the door and door-frame (I still need to stain the two window-frames the same tint).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Next I started to cut out and stain the boards for the outside trim of the floor.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Haven’t gotten very far but it’s bedtime now…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

…so goodnight.

Sometimes you spend hours working on something that looks like very little progress in the end. Tonight was one of those times…

Since I was dealing with uneven floor issues (left over from earlier leveling problems), it took quite a while to glue in the north wall of the nursery correctly…and then to wallpaper it in such a way as to cover whatever issues were left.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’m not a hundred percent sure I like my wallpaper seam on the back wall, but I’m too tired to try again…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I also started cutting out tiny floor boards that will eventually make up the pattern I found in this photo.

images

But for now, here is the east side of the house.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And here is the nursery table…complete with Aesop’s Fables, a sheet of tiny paper dolls, and a set of eyeglasses for the governess.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Good night.

Spent a bit of time today on the nursery chimney and fireplace. Made the walls for the chimney first.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And attached them to the outside wall with the fireplace wires passing through the two walls.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then I placed the walls and the fireplace into the room and set a model ship on the mantel piece.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Reminded me of Neil Finn’s song lyrics:

“Well there’s a small boat made of china
It’s going nowhere on the mantelpiece…”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Here’s this side of the house for now.

P3173475_6_7_8_9

I took the wallpaper I was planning on using and modified the size to print it.

Nursery main wallpaper with swans

The wall part looked right, so I glued it on, but the swan trim is too big (for that matter, so is the wallpaper I leaned up against the hallway wall…it’s hard to predict the way it’ll turn out when you’re using photoshop). I’ll have to try again tomorrow.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Slow going, I know, but for now….good night.
